The World Needs to Celebrate Those Who Defend Wildlife
On August 15, the Danish courts held a hearing for Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace, the original Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and Captain Paul Watson Foundation. His detention, an injustice, sparked a global outcry from activists worldwide.
The Proceedings
The proceedings were entirely in Danish, without a translator, which violates Danish law. This is concerning, at best, about the fairness of a legal trial when the courts can disregard their rules about the rights of individuals working to uphold international law.
During the proceeding, the Danish judge commented that Paul’s comments at the hearing didn’t make any difference, dismissing his statements.
As a result, Captain Paul Watson is currently held in Greenland, with the Danish courts set to decide on his extradition on September 5th. This is an urgent and concerning matter, as extraditing a 73-year-old man to Japan, given the harsh conditions in Japanese prisons, is akin to a death sentence.
